Socially progressive legislation adopted by the Government of India

The Government of India continues to adopt socially progressives legislations for the benefit of its citizens, including the following recent legislation:

 

(i) The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019: This legislation provides for the protection of rights of transgender persons and their welfare and for matters connected therewith and incidental thereto.

(ii) The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (Amendment ) Bill 2019: This bill aims to provide for the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens for ensuring their basic needs, safety and security, establishment, management, and regulation of institutions and services, and rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

(iii) Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020: The Bill seeks to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 and aims to expand access of women to safe and legal abortion services on therapeutic, eugenic, humanitarian or social grounds.

(iv) Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Regulation Bill 2020: This Bill is intended to monitor medical procedures used to assist people to achieve pregnancy. The Bill will regulate the Assisted Reproductive Technology services in the country. Consequently, infertile couples will be more ensured/confident of the ethical practices in ARTs.

(v) The Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2019: It aims to ban commercial surrogacy and allow altruistic surrogacy for Indian citizens.
